The conflict between India and Pakistan has rapidly worsened, turning into a hazardous and unstable standoff. The region is seeing a sharp rise in military activity and a breakdown in diplomacy in the wake of a deadly terrorist incident in Pahalgam that India attributes to Pakistan.
An overview of the concerning developments is provided here:
Indian military action, known as “Operation Sindoor,” involved firing missiles at suspected terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan launched its own attacks in retaliation, claiming to have shot down Indian jets. Heavy artillery fire has been fired over the Line of Control (LoC) by both sides.
India claims to have stopped Pakistan’s attempts to employ drones and missiles to target military targets, while Pakistan charges India with carrying out drone attacks that killed civilians.
Indian air defence systems reportedly shot down more than 50 drones from Pakistan.
Border Security Measures:
Reducing police leave, preparing for evacuations in border states, and stepping up patrols are all examples of enhanced security on both sides of the border.
In the border districts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir, widespread blackouts have been implemented. Chandigarh and other places have heard air raid sirens.
Travel and Airport Interruptions:
Many airports in northern India have been closed. Travellers are advised by Air India to come at least three hours in advance.
According to reports, both nations have shuttered their airspace, recalled diplomats, revoked visas, and closed their land borders.
Domestic Impact in India:
Government employee leaves are cancelled and a high alert is issued in Delhi. Uttarakhand’s hospitals are on high alert. Special trains are scheduled by Indian Railways from Udhampur and Jammu.
Global Issues:
Although the US has advocated for de-escalation, it views the situation as “not our business.” The possibility of a more extensive battle between the neighbours who possess nuclear weapons is a major worry on a global scale.
To put it simply, the area is precariously close. Miscalculation could result in a catastrophic conflict because of the current increase in hostile acts and rhetoric from both sides. The world community is anxiously awaiting a quick de-escalation to prevent the issue from getting out of hand.
