In response to the devastating terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, 2025. This operation involved coordinated airstrikes targeting nine alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The strikes, executed between 1:05 AM and 1:30 AM, aimed to dismantle infrastructures linked to groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba
Casualties and Damage: India reports the elimination of approximately 70 militants, including associates of Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar . Pakistan, however, claims that the strikes resulted in 26 civilian deaths and 46 injuries, accusing India of targeting non-military sites .
Military Engagements: Following the airstrikes, Pakistan retaliated by reportedly shooting down five Indian aircraft and engaging in heavy artillery exchanges along the Line of Control. India has not confirmed the loss of its aircraft .
Diplomatic Fallout: Both nations have taken reciprocal measures, including the cancellation of visas and the downgrading of diplomatic ties. India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a significant water-sharing agreement between the two countries.
International Response: Global leaders and organizations, including the United Nations and the United States, have expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions and have urged both countries to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation .
Domestic Measures: In India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level meeting with chief ministers and security officials from border states to assess national security. Additionally, over 200 flights have been canceled, and at least 18 airports, including Srinagar, have been temporarily shut down due to the heightened security situation .
The situation remains volatile, with both nations on high alert. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, emphasizing the need for diplomatic engagement to de-escalate tensions and ensure regional stability.
